PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. (AP) — Police in coastal Georgia have identified two victims in a deadly train crash.
Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police spokesman Julian Miller says 57-year-old Martha Newton of Savannah and 34-year-old Amanda Newton of Atlanta were killed when the SUV they were riding in was hit by a train in Port Wentworth Sunday afternoon.
Investigators have said the driver disregarded warning gates and flashing lights at a railroad crossing. The SUV was struck as soon as it crossed onto the tracks.
Miller says 35-year-old Vanessa Newton and a 14-year-old girl, both of whom are from Atlanta, were taken to a local hospital. The woman is listed in critical condition and the teen is in serious condition.
Authorities say everyone except the driver was ejected from the SUV.
The crash remains under investigation.
